One of the most notable advancements is the establishment of the Colossus AI data center by SpaceX’s AI division, SpaceXAI (formerly xAI), in the Boxtown neighborhood. This facility, constructed in 2024, has been instrumental in powering AI systems like Grok. However, its rapid development and operational scale have raised concerns among local residents.
Community Concerns and Environmental Impact
Residents of Boxtown, a historically Black community, have reported increased respiratory issues, which some attribute to emissions from the data center’s gas turbines. Environmental studies have indicated a 79% rise in peak nitrogen dioxide levels in the area. Additionally, the facility’s substantial resource consumption—1.1 gigawatts of power and a million gallons of water daily—has strained local infrastructure.
In response to these concerns, SpaceX has offered residents near its data centers in Memphis and Southaven a 50% discount on Starlink internet plans and free hardware rental. While presented as a gesture of goodwill, some community members view this as an attempt to mitigate criticism without addressing the core environmental issues.
City Initiatives and Community Benefits
Recognizing the need to balance technological advancement with community well-being, the city of Memphis has established the Community Benefits Fund. This initiative allocates a portion of tax revenue from AI properties to support local residents.
