Lubbock, Texas (KCBD) – Lubbock small businesses desperate for customers are turning to social media for help.
Next to Wild Lark books in Lubbock is a sign for a local brewery that has decided to close its shop.
“We’re not really worried per se. We’re just aware of it and hope that people in Lubbock will be more aware and mindful when they go down the mountain,” said Wild Lark owner Brianne van Reenen.
The sign highlights the current state of some small businesses.
“We noticed it was getting a little slower,” van Reenen said.
So, she did what some other guys were doing, Connect via Facebook. In a post, she wrote that the store “desperately needs your support.”
“I don’t think we’re seeing that. And I don’t think the businesses around us are seeing that,” van Reenen said.
But it wasn’t just her shop that was down.
“We’re forgotten. People can live without us, but we can’t live without you, of course, because that’s our livelihood,” said Destiny Adams, co-owner of Tumbleweed + Sage Coffeehouse.
Adams used the same strategy in Wolfforth. She also went to Facebook because the store only sold $6 worth of coffee one morning.
“Naturally, you think, what have I got to lose, what’s going to happen? And then we were obviously pretty shocked by what happened,” Adams said.
In less than half an hour, there were people lining up in the store, and some even made donations.Too many, the store is planning a giveback event Saturday.
However, due to some past controversies, Hosting drag shows and distributing contraceptivesin the back of Adams’ mind, there was some resentment toward the store.
“I sat down and thought, is that why we’re moving slowly? Then I started seeing other local businesses in town struggling,” Adams said.
So if others post about their struggles over the past few weeks, owners like van Reenen hope they get the same response.
“I think that’s why a lot of our small businesses are taking our side and asking members of the community to really consciously engage as we’re heading into a tough winter after a really tough summer and fall,” van Reenen said. .”
