Business owners, residents fined for burning trash

MOhawk, N.Y. (NEWS10) — An unnamed business owner and an unnamed resident were fined for illegally burning solid waste in 2021. They agreed to pay a $1,590 fine after pleading guilty to one count of unlawfully disposing of solid waste.

On October 1, 2021, an Environmental Conservation Officer (ECO) observed an unattended fire burning waste from a commercial scrapping facility. Working with Mohawk Town bylaw officials and talking to neighbors, they said, they issued tickets to residents and business owners for unattended open fires, illegal disposal of solid waste and operating noisy and unsanitary businesses on or near highways .

Over the next year, the ECO said, the defendants refused to settle the charges and did not appear in Mohawk Town Court as scheduled. A substitute arrest warrant was issued, forcing him to settle the charges. More than a year later, the ECO said they accepted a plea deal and the commercial property is no longer used for commercial operations.
