Clerk offices reopen with long queues

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) — The Shelby County clerk’s office reopened Monday after a week-long hiatus to catch up on the backlog of fulfilling customer orders, but long lines are also returning.

“It’s Monday, who wants to do this on Monday?” asked frustrated client Brennan Lester

When we found Leicester on Poplar Avenue. She was with her sister, who she said switched between queues and breaks for more than 90 minutes.

“We saw the line, but we never expected it,” Lester said. “When we saw it, I said, ‘Oh my God.'”

Lester bought her car from Nevada and had problems transferring ownership. Although her problems are different from others, she said she understands the frustration.

“I’ve been waiting eight weeks. I still don’t have my label, I can’t do it online,” Lester said.

Lester added that she was concerned she might get traffic citations, which she hadn’t had before.

“If I get stopped for having my tag, then I’ll send my ticket to Wanda Halbert and she can pay,” Lester said.

We reached out to Clerk Halbert to see if she has looked at last week’s numbers to update us on the progress of reducing the backlog. We haven’t heard back from her yet.
