Community supports local stores during Small Business Saturday

MONETA, Va. (WDBJ) – Behind a small business like Smith Mountain Lake Coffee House is a community that supports it.

“We wouldn’t be able to do business without them,” said Kevin Gray, co-owner of Smith’s Mountain Lake Cafe.

The Gray family opened the coffee shop in 2019. A second branch has since been opened.

“Because it’s a seasonal town in the off-season, everyone who lives here really supports the small businesses, which makes a huge difference,” Gray added.

That’s why Brad Bays and his family went to grab a cup of coffee during the little business on Saturdays.

“I think it’s really important that locals support businesses year-round, especially around the lake. A lot of times we’re busy in the summer and tend to slow down in the winter,” Beth said.

Slowing down in winter can be hard on families, especially around Christmas.

“Don’t go shopping at those big box stores. Every day of the year is for them, supporting someone, maybe your next-door neighbor or someone down the road, whose family you can help out over the holidays,” says Amy Debaugh.

As a small business owner with Bays Trash Removal, the Bays say it’s important to support each other.

“Whenever you get the chance. Just come out and support any small business, because when you support one small business, you don’t know the trickle-down effect on many other businesses,” Bess explained.

Gray said it doesn’t have to be Saturday’s small businesses to support them. You can show up every day.

“Keep being a small business, if you will. It helps us to be able to employ local people, but it also helps us feed our families,” Gray said.
