Dems show Mills support for small business, Republicans point to fuel costs

Mainers will go to the polls on November 11. 8 Vote for the next governor.

MAINE, United States — In less than 50 days, Mayas will head to the polls to vote for the next governor.

Maine Democrats gathered at the Orono Brewing Company on Thursday to highlight how much Gov. Janet Mills has done to support small businesses. Meanwhile, some Republicans say she’s not doing enough.

Multiple business owners discussed Mills’ impact on their business, including the Maine Democratic Rep. Joe Perry.

Perry said his small market in Bangor is doing better than it has been in the past 30 years.

“I’m worried about what it would mean for myself and for a lot of small businesses if we went back to where we were before Governor Mills,” Perry said.

Republican state Senator Stacey Guerin is a small business owner himself. She questioned the Democrats’ positive portrayal of the economy.

“Our inflation is going up. Interest rates are skyrocketing. My constituents are contacting me every day asking how they will pay [for] Because of the increased cost of fuel, their oil. This is not a thriving economy,” Guerin said.

A wedding venue owner credits Mills’ environmental policies with her vibrant Penobscot Bay property.

Emerald Forcier, owner of Penobscot Bay Wedding in Winterport, said for many reasons – such as environmental policy and a stance on marriage equality – Mills’ re-election was vital to her business.

“She has been an amazing housekeeper in our beautiful state, I remember one time our property couldn’t be a beautiful wedding venue because of the yellow foam, [and] Lack of birds. Now we have beautiful water in Penobscot Bay,” Forcier said.

Forcier added that Mills is the only option to ensure marriage equality in Maine is safe for years to come.

“LGBTQ+ rights are human rights. They’re important beyond your wedding weekend,” Forsier said. “It’s very important to our industry that everyone has their marital right to be sacredly supported.”
