DJ Schramm returns to Boise State for ‘unfinished business’

“I think we have unfinished business,” Schramm said. “I mean, who wouldn’t want the opportunity to come back and try to win a title?”

BOISE, Idaho — Eight super seniors announced Tuesday that they will return to the Boise State football program for the 2023 season. When the list comes out, maybe the head of the band is DJ Schramm.

The second-team All West Mountain linebacker led the Broncos in solo tackles (53), total tackles (107) and fumbled tackles (11.5) last fall.

Schramm served as a backup for four years while emerging on special teams before the 2022 campaign. Despite not playing much playing time, the California native’s commitment to the blue and orange never faltered.

Schramm’s consistency and admirable work ethic paid off as he became the first Broncos since at least 2005 to have more than 100 tackles for loss and 10 tackles for loss in a season.

After Boise State’s victory over North Texas in the Frisco Bowl, Schramm took some time to “decompress” and consider using the extra COVID-year eligibility.

Ultimately, the decision to bring The Blue back became obvious to the seasoned “backer.” Schramm let Broncos defensive coordinator Spencer Danielson know he would return and said the coach’s leadership played a big role.

“Coach D was thrilled when I told him. He was great. He cared more about us as a person than just football players, which is a big thing for me,” Schramm said. “He really cares about us, he loves everyone on our team, and that means a lot.”

Not only is the center the anchor of Boise State’s defense, but he brings back a wealth of experience to a team that’s lost a lot of its veterans.

Schram said he felt he and the entire team had “unfinished business” to deal with after the Broncos’ 10-win season and loss to the Mountain West championship game after a tumultuous few months.

“I don’t think I’ve hit my ceiling. There’s always more to do, there’s always room to grow, and I don’t want to say it’s a big factor in my decision, but there’s definitely still some for those guys. More locker rooms,” Schramm said. “I think we have unfinished business here. I mean, who wouldn’t want the opportunity to come back and try to win a title?”
