Donut Food Trailer Business Destroyed in I-475 Crash

SYLVANIA TWP., Ohio (WTVG) – Hot, fresh donuts served straight from the trailer. That’s the dream of Heidi Sherman and her husband Ryan.

The Sylvania Township couple signed with their favorite doughnut company, Detroit Mini Donuts, and opened a mobile business in the Toledo area in August 2022. They worked the festival for almost two months until last Wednesday in October. On January 12, 2022, a car accident destroyed their trailer and took Heidi to hospital.

“I was just coming home from the highway and all of a sudden, rumbling, like, really just rumbling,” said Heidi, who said she was heading north on I-475 through Maumee near St. Petersburg . Luke Hospital at the time of the crash. Heidi was on her way home from an event near the water’s edge in Monclova when her trailer was hit from behind by a pickup truck.

“The trailer started rolling, and it was like, even though it was hooked up, it started doing this,” said Heidi, who was driving another pickup truck pulling her trailer. “When you’re spinning on the freeway you have all sorts of crazy ideas in your head, but I’m really lucky, I’m lucky, people are amazing. I get emotional about that part. The community is so amazing Bravo.”

Heidi eventually suffered a mild concussion and shoulder pain. The driver of the other pickup also suffered minor injuries, but the Detroit Mini Donuts-Toledo food trailer was hit, she said.

“We were very frustrated. We put a lot of effort, time, energy and money into the opening,” Heidi added.

She and her husband are now looking for another trailer or food truck so they can start over and rebuild the business they worked so hard to start two months ago. Click here to follow their progress on the Detroit Mini Donuts – Toledo Facebook page.
