Meridian School Board approves $32,000 in additional technology purchases

Meridian Public Schools Board of Education approved the purchase of $32,000 in additional computer equipment for staff.

Chancellor Craig Camoni estimates that more than 100 devices could be purchased for staff. He said the device would be an Apple or PC device.

The updated request comes after the region’s recent purchase of technology. The school board held its regular meeting at Meridian Early College High School in Sanford on Monday.

Potential solutions for student numbers, program updates, and addressing facilities based on high enrollment are also discussed.

In terms of admissions, Meridian Public Schools welcomed 25 new students this year. Most, 20 freshmen, attend Sanford Elementary School.

Sanford Elementary School has a total of 552 students. Carmoni said the kindergarten class has as many children as the largest class, grade 10.

Kindergarten has 115 students and Year 10 has 116 students.

“Now, in elementary school, we teach music in the cafeteria on the stage,” he said. “We’ve got other specials on the carts besides the gym and art…we’re tight on space right now.”

While acknowledging the problem, Camoni called the registration numbers “reliable.”

“I think in a few years we could be over 1,400 students,” he said.

There are 1,367 students in the district, Camoni said. The first official Student Statistics Day will take place in October. 5 across Michigan.
