NORTH HARBOR, Ala. (WBRC) – This is just the beginning of a long cleanup process for those affected by the tornado. Many local organizations are doing their part to help victims of Thursday’s storm.
Former North Port mayor Bobby Herndon is gathering supplies to be delivered to the hardest-hit areas next week.
He, owner of Herndon, Hicks & Associates, said after a 2011 tornado devastated much of Tuscaloosa and its surroundings, he vowed to give back whenever he got the chance.
Herndon is in touch with the Autauga County EMA and said they are still in the search process, but by next week they will need donations such as tarps, hammers, saws, batteries and flashlights. As for the victims, they need non-perishable food, as well as personal hygiene items and baby products.
Herndon said his business has been accepting disaster relief donations for 12 years. They’ve made 15 trips across four states, and he knows how much these supplies can help.
“I’m a very sensitive person,” Herndon said. “I cry easily just thinking about everyone who has come to donate, come to these places and see how grateful people are because someone is thinking of them and someone wants to help.”
Herndon will take all donations to Selma and Otoga counties Wednesday morning. He said you could drop by his office to deliver supplies before then. The address is 2728 Lurleen Wallace Boulevard in North Port.
