The incident, which came just days after Eliza Fletcher’s kidnapping and murder, shocked Memphis and instilled fear in the hearts of residents. Tennessee State Police officer Fletcher was arrested by police shortly after her body was abducted while out jogging. The 34-year-old mother-of-two was “violently” forced into a black SUV when she was kidnapped and a pair of sandals left at the scene led police to her alleged kidnapper, Cleotha Abston, who reportedly Stalked her until she ran past him on her morning run before he could ambush her. Her body was later found on the steps of a dilapidated single-storey house just yards from the vehicle police were last found forced into. Abston, who killed her, was soon arrested. Authorities have not confirmed Fletcher’s cause of death. She is an elementary school teacher and the granddaughter of the late Joseph Ogier III, a billionaire hardware company.

Abston was also later charged with an unrelated kidnapping and rape that occurred a year earlier. DNA evidence gathered from his most recent arrest revealed this information. The 38-year-old was given a second indictment at a hearing on Thursday, September 8, where the judge refused bail. The new charges appeared on the Shelby County Criminal Justice Portal. Abston was re-registered on new charges of aggravated rape, particularly aggravated kidnapping and unlawful possession of a weapon. According to Memphis police, the new charges relate to a rape kit sent to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in September 2021 after an unidentified woman approached police about the alleged crime.
