JENISON, Mich. — In early December, police arrested two out-of-state men. 3 and recovered more than $50,000 in stolen business checks believed to be related to recent mail thefts.
A representative for the Ottawa County Sheriff said 911 was called around 3:50 a.m. on Dec. 12. 3 Report a suspicious vehicle to a business in the 1200 block of Rosewood Street.
Representatives arrived to find a high volume of open mail in the area. Police quickly located a vehicle they believed to be involved and stopped traffic.
They recovered a large number of business checks that were allegedly withdrawn from four different business mailboxes.
Both were taken to the Ottawa County Jail.
Ahmad Malone, 29, of Waukegan, Illinois, was charged with receiving and concealing stolen property valued at more than $20,000. Another man in Merrillville, Indiana, is expected to face the same charges.
Police are investigating whether the mail theft is related to mail thefts reported in Ottawa County over the past few months.
In the past few months, deputies have responded to nearly a hundred mail theft and check fraud complaints related to stolen checks, police said.
So far, several people have been arrested for cashing fraudulent checks.
