This week’s episode of “Saturday Night Live” opens with one of the most high-profile moments in recent news: A House select committee is investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, uprising.

Kenan Thompson, who plays Congressman. Bennie Thompson kicks off NBC Variety by introducing viewers to the committee’s ninth and final hearing.

“January 6th was one of the most dramatic and important moments in our nation’s history, so to fight back, we assembled a team of drab nerds to do a PowerPoint,” said Thompson’s Benny Thompson.

He then went on to say that the committee had been investigating the attack for more than a year, but this meeting would be “slightly different”.

“We’re going to summarize our findings, hold a historic vote, and then, only then, we’ll be able to eat a little something,” Thompson’s Benny Thompson said, pulling out the pastry.

After the introduction, Rep. Liz Cheney, played by Heidi Gardner, spoke.

“Over the past few months, this bipartisan committee has briefed all Americans on our case,” she said. “Whether you’re a Republican who doesn’t look, or a Democrat who nods hard, your head is about to fall, and one person is responsible for this uprising: Donald Trump. One person will bear the consequences: me.”

Viewers may wonder what makes her so tough, Gardner’s Cheney said, saying she would ask viewers, “Who’s your dad? Is it Dick Cheney?”

“So, yeah, I guess you could say I have a lot of Dick Cheney energy,” she said.

The committee then reviewed some evidence, including videos of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, played by Chloe Feynman, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, played by Sarah Sherman, in the bunker.

“Hello, DoorDash? It’s Chuck Schumer,” Sherman’s Schumer said on the phone from the bunker. “Yes, we haven’t received our lunch order yet. I did change our drop-off location due to some unfortunate treason, but it should have arrived by now.”

The committee then found evidence of then-President Donald Trump, asking a group of people if he lost the election, including a White House janitor who said he did.

Trump even asked about a dog that “rocked dead people from side to side.”

“Donald desperately wants to stay in power,” the Rep. said. Adam Kinsinger, played by Andrew Dismox, said. “Though true heroes like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer are the ones who really run this country.

It then immediately switched to Sherman’s Schumer and Finman’s Pelosi talking to then-Vice President Mike Pence.

“Let me tell you, if Trump came here now, I would punch him straight in the face,” Feynman’s Pelosi said. “I’ll go to jail, but I’ll be happy.”

Thompson’s Bennie Thompson then asked Gardner’s Cheney for final thoughts.

“The truth is, whatever the outcome, Trump plans to declare victory,” she said. “Look at this video of the president the day before the election.”

The video shown is of James Austin Johnson as Trump says “voting doesn’t matter” on the phone.

“What is voting?” he said.

The committee then voted to subpoena Trump. They all voted yes and thought he would actually show up.

“Well, I can already see it’s a complete zero,” said Thompson’s Benny Thompson. “I want to thank my colleagues for dedicating their summers, and in some cases, their careers, to this committee.”

He then added that it was “an interesting country and it persisted.”

After that, it led to the show’s signature phrase “Live…from New York! It’s Saturday night!”
