Tire Nichols: Kamala Harris and families of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor to attend funeral | US News

Families of U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and George Floyd will attend Tyle Nichols’ funeral in Memphis on Wednesday.

The White House announced the action ahead of a service at the Mississippi Avenue Christian Church in Memphis, Tennessee.

The families of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, who died at the hands of police in the United States in 2020, will also attend their father’s funeral.

Mr. Nichols, 29, was savagely beaten by several Memphis police officers who punched, kicked and beat him with batons after he was pulled over at a traffic stop in Memphis on Jan. 7.

He died in hospital three days later.

So far, five black officers have been fired and charged with second-degree murder and other crimes in connection with his death, and two others have been suspended.

Yesterday, the Memphis Fire Department also confirmed that Three members fired after investigation Mr Nichols was found handcuffed to the ground almost 15 minutes after the attack and without medical attention.

Disturbing footage of the altercation shows Mr Nichols yelling at his mother as he was beaten by police.

‘I didn’t do anything’, pleads Tire Nichols

Protests took place in several US cities after the video was released and Mr Nichols’ family Said they would not stop fighting for justice.

On Tuesday, Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy said that as criticism of the handling of the case mounts, prosecutors may bring more criminal charges against the police officer and others involved in the fatal beating.

The five officers who were fired and charged are Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr and Justin Smith, aged between 24 and 32.

No criminal charges have been filed against Preston Hemphill, a white police officer who was suspended after the attack and was not present when the fatal beating occurred.

In body camera footage that initially lingers, Hemphill is heard saying he hit Mr Nichols with a muay thai punch and declared: “I want them to step on his ass.”

A seventh officer, who was not immediately identified, was also fired without pay and has not been charged, police said. His role in the incident has not been disclosed.

Mr Nichols’ killing follows the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor in 2020, which sparked massive protests against police brutality in the US.

Mr Floyd was killed after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes, and Ms Taylor was shot dead in a botched police raid in Louisville, Kentucky.
