A Twitter employee told Sky News his laptop had been wiped remotely and his account locked as the company considered mass layoffs.

Reports have suggested that the social network’s new owner, Elon Musk, could lay off as many as half of the company’s 8,000-strong workforce after acquiring the social network for $44 billion.

British Twitter employee Simon Balmain told Sky News he found out his account had been locked this morning.

“A few days ago we started hearing strong rumours of layoffs,” he said.

“Then, late last night, we all got an email saying the headcount would be drastically reduced, the email saying if we were fired, we would get an email to our personal mailboxes, if not, we Will” d hear in our work emails.

“Then at around 2AM, I noticed my laptop was remotely wiped and my email access and Slack access were revoked.

“I then contacted a few colleagues and it seemed like a lot of people had the same thing.”

Asked how Musk has discovered the ongoing uncertainty around the company since he expressed interest in acquiring Twitter in April, he said: “It’s a weird mix of emotions. I really enjoy working at Twitter, It’s incredible, but this acquisition is unprecedented in about a million different ways.

‘I think layoffs are inevitable’

Mr. Balmain went on to say that he believes some layoffs may be inevitable regardless of whether the Musk deal goes through.
