Who is Kevin McCarthy? If elected speaker, what is his goal?
Kevin McCarthy, 57, was first elected to Congress in 2006 and currently serves in California’s 23rd District of the House of Representatives.
After winning $5,000 (£4,142) on a lottery scratch card at the age of 20, Mr McCarthy put all the cash into opening a deli to put himself through university.
While studying at Cal State Bakersfield, he interned for Congressman Bill Thomas and later became his regular employee.
Once elected to Congress, he quickly became chief deputy whip and later majority whip. In 2014, he was elected the Republican leader of the House of Representatives.
Back in 2015, he abruptly dropped out of the race for House speaker after facing resistance from fellow conservatives who currently block his way on three votes.
If elected speaker, McCarthy is expected to focus on investigations of the Biden administration with Republicans in the House of Representatives.
Ahead of November’s midterm elections, he unveiled a “Promise to America” with four overarching goals: a strong economy, a secure nation, government accountability and freedom.
On diplomatic issues, Mr McCarthy said he wanted greater oversight of spending to bolster Ukraine against a nearly year-long Russian invasion.
