The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, in a nationwide search for its next vice chancellor for business and finance, will begin interviewing finalists on September 18. 27.
The first candidate was Bonnie Whalen, vice president of institutional finance and strategy at Iowa State University. She will be on campus in September. 27.
Other candidates will be announced prior to their campus visit.
Whalen has worked in higher education for 33 years, including 15 years as Chief Financial Officer of the Iowa Department of Student Affairs. Since February, she has served as Iowa’s Vice President for Institutional Financial Strategy and University Secretary. 20.
Her current responsibilities include treasury operations, investments, debt management, budgeting, financial planning and analysis, and institutional financial reporting. She is also a member of the University’s Strategic Planning Working Group.
Whalen serves on the Iowa Alumni Association Board of Directors and many other campus committees. She is a member of the Association of Financial Professionals, the Higher Education Finance Institute, and the National Association of College Business Officials. She serves on several community and local 4-H committees.
Whalen received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and a Master of Public Administration from Iowa in 1992 and 2012, respectively.

Nebraska’s vice chancellor for business and finance is the university’s senior business officer and reports to the chancellor. This position is responsible for overseeing and managing the University’s $1.2 billion operating budget, all financial and administrative services, and compliance with University policies and state and federal laws.
The Vice Chancellor leads operational activities related to the University’s physical facilities and grounds, Nebraska sites, University Police, Parking and Transportation Services, Human Resources and other business services.

Whalen and other upcoming finalists were selected through a national search. The search was assisted by a search advisory committee headed by Law School Dean Richard Moberly. The committee is made up of students, staff, and representatives of the Greater Lincoln community, including:
